Halloween Sunday 1932, American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr preached a sermon on the importance of action in the face of the rise of the KKK at home and Nazi Youth abroad. Christian realism he called it. Winnifred Wygal wrote down his words that day: "Oh God, give us the courage to change what must be altered, serenity to accept what cannot be helped and wisdom to the one from the other." These words circulated and evolved into the Serenity Prayer adopted and popularized by Alcoholics Anonymous in the 1940s
